 Mucuna pruriens, commonly known as “velvet bean,” is actually a legume (seed) that contains L-Dopa. L-Dopa is a dopamine precursor from which Mucuna extract is able to derive many of its benefits. Dopamine is a very important neurotransmitter.

It is a small perennial herb from the Scrophulariaceae family. The rhizome of Picrorhiza has been traditionally used to treat worms, constipation, low fever, scorpion sting, asthma and ailments affecting the liver.

Senna is an Arabian name and the herb was first brought into use by the Arabian physicians Serapion and Mesue. Traditionally Senna was used in love sachets. Plants growing at different localities of India have also been found to contain different amount of sennoside B in leaves and pods, and also differ in chromosome morphology. The leaves and pods of this plant contain the commercially important laxative sennoside B.

Medicinal Values:

• Senna is an excellent laxative.
• Senna is employed in treating many other ailments like, anemia, typhoid, cholera, jaundice, rheumatism, gout, tumours, probably in leprosy, in splenic enlargement, foul breath and bronchitis.
• It is also used in the treatment of amoebic dysentery and a mild liver stimulant.
• Effective in constipation, thermogenic, cathartic, liver tonic, abdominal disorders, leucoderma, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, dyspepsia, cough and skin disorders.
• Sennoside acts on the lower bowel and is especially useful in improving / lightening constipation.

Dosages:

• Senna leaves or pods have been used as a stimulant laxative at dosages of 0.6 to 2 g/day, with a daily dose of sennoside B from 20 to 30 mg
• The brand Senokot is available in 8.6 and 17.2 mg tablets. A bitter tea can be made containing senna 0.5 to 2 g (ie, ½ to 1 teaspoon). Senna should not be used at higher doses or for extended periods of time

Uses:

• Uuggul has been used in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system for centuries and has been studied extensively in India
• Commercial products are promoted for lowering cholesterol; however, clinical studies do not support this claim
• Anti-inflammatory and heart/blood vessel effects are being evaluated, as well as use in cancer, obesity, and diabetes

Side Effects:

• Although generally accepted as relatively safe, case reports of adverse events exist
• Moderate to severe generalized short-term skin reactions to oral guggul have been reported, and caution may be warranted
• A case report exists of muscle deterioration possibly caused by guggul consumption
